Endangered Species Day 2010 – October 21st and 22nd
About
On October 21st and 22nd, the Riverside County Habitat Conservation Agency (RCHCA), in conjunction with Environmental Programs Division (EPD) of the Riverside County Planning Department, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, and the City of Riverside, held its sixth annual outreach program to commemorate the signing of the Endangered Species Act.
Over 2400 students from the Riverside Unified School District were transported from their schools to Riverside’s Sycamore Canyon Wilderness Park to participate in the activities that supported the theme of “Where Our World and the Natural World Meet.”
Dr. Michael Glassey provided an up-close experience with Drumstick, a rescued barn owl, and Orion, a red-tailed hawk. He also shared a variety of snakes, insects, and even a desert tortoise.
Students had the opportunity to experience the event that included hiking along the trail that extends up the hill into the Park.
The experience was intended to augment and expand upon what is taught in the classroom in the hope of instilling in students a sense of ecology and caring for their world.
